now windows 10 has arrived it seems to check the validity of your current license via the "software licensing service" but when I just ran the command to check mine returns a blank.  Apparently MSDN versions are missing so is TechNet also?

The command to run is "wmic path softwarelicensingservice get OA3xOriginalProductKey."

Since we dont have MSDN version of Windows 8.1 for test, we cant confirm that if this is missing in that edition. You could confirm that at MSDN forum. This command works on system image created by Windows 8.1 media creation tool.

Make sure your machine has valid product key installed, I tested on machines in test environment (without valid key activated) it also returns blank to me.

Try PowerShell command for good measure

powershell "(Get-WmiObject -query select * from SoftwareLicensingService).OA3xOriginalProductKey"
